The least common personality disorder is known as Depressive Personality Disorder (DPD). DPD is characterized by pervasive feelings of sadness, pessimism, and a tendency to be self-critical. People with DPD often feel worthless and guilty, are unable to form relationships, and may struggle with suicidal thoughts. DPD is considered rare, with estimates of its prevalence ranging from 0.5 to 2.2 percent of the population.

Signs and Symptoms of Depressive Personality Disorder

The signs and symptoms of DPD can vary from person to person, but some common signs and symptoms include:

• Pervasive feelings of sadness, guilt, and worthlessness
• Low self-esteem
• Difficulty making and maintaining relationships
• Difficulty making decisions and solving problems
• A tendency to be self-critical
• An inability to express joy or take pleasure in activities
• Suicidal thoughts or behaviors

Causes of Depressive Personality Disorder

The exact cause of DPD is not known, but a variety of factors may contribute to its development. These factors include genetic predisposition, environmental influences, and psychological trauma.

Treatment of Depressive Personality Disorder

The primary treatment for DPD is psychotherapy, which can help people with DPD learn how to manage their symptoms and gain insight into their behaviors. Medication may also be prescribed to help manage symptoms of depression and anxiety.
