Subtitle: Tests for Impaired Pancreatic Function
The pancreas plays an essential role in digestion and is responsible for producing hormones and enzymes that help break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. When the pancreas is not functioning properly, it can lead to health problems such as diabetes, pancreatitis, and cystic fibrosis. One of the most sensitive tests of impaired pancreatic function is a fecal elastase-1 test. This test measures the amount of elastase-1, an enzyme produced by the pancreas, in a stool sample. The results of the test can be used to diagnose pancreatic diseases or to monitor the effectiveness of treatments.
Other tests that can be used to measure pancreatic function include blood tests to measure levels of glucose, lipase, and amylase. These enzymes are all produced by the pancreas and their levels can indicate if the pancreas is functioning normally. Imaging tests, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, can also be used to evaluate the pancreas. Finally, an endoscopic ultrasound can be used to look directly at the pancreas and detect any abnormalities.
