Chemotherapy and Hair Loss

Chemotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses drugs to destroy cancer cells and stop them from growing and multiplying. Unfortunately, it can also cause a range of side effects, including hair loss. The extent to which hair loss occurs depends on the type of chemotherapy medications used and the dosage.

Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss. It can range from mild hair thinning to complete baldness. Hair loss usually begins 1–3 weeks after chemotherapy begins and can last for several weeks after the treatment ends. The hair typically grows back within 6–12 months after the treatment is finished.

Types of Chemotherapy That Cause Hair Loss

Most chemotherapy drugs can cause hair loss, but some are more likely to cause it than others. The most common chemo drugs that cause hair loss are:

Adriamycin (doxorubicin)
Cytoxan (cyclophosphamide)
Taxol (paclitaxel)
Vinblastine (vinblastine sulfate)

Preventing Hair Loss

There are a few steps you can take to try to prevent or minimize hair loss during chemotherapy. These include:

• Wearing a cold cap during treatment, which is a special cap that is cooled to a very low temperature. This decreases the amount of chemotherapy drugs that reach the scalp.

• Taking a medication called minoxidil (Rogaine) before and during chemotherapy. This is a topical medication that is applied to the scalp and can help to reduce hair loss.

• Avoiding heat styling and using gentle hair care products. This can help to prevent further damage to the hair.

Most chemotherapies used to treat cancer can cause hair loss. This usually occurs two to four weeks after the start of treatment and usually affects the entire scalp, including facial and body hair. The amount of hair loss can vary from person to person and some may experience more severe hair loss than others. Hair loss is typically temporary, and the hair usually grows back after the chemotherapy has finished.

Chemotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that involves using drugs to destroy cancer cells. Unfortunately, one of the possible side effects of chemotherapy is hair loss. Hair loss can occur several weeks after starting chemotherapy and can vary in severity depending on the type of chemotherapy administered. Hair loss is often temporary and hair can regrow once the chemotherapy treatment is completed. However, some chemotherapy drugs can cause permanent hair loss, so it is important to discuss this potential side effect with your doctor before starting chemotherapy.
