Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and have been recently diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. I am hoping to gain some insight and support from other forum users who may have experienced similar symptoms.

I am wondering if anyone can share their stories on what were their first signs of MND? How did you notice the symptoms? How did you discover you had MND?

I would really appreciate any help or advice that anyone can provide.

Thank you for your time.

Early Signs of MND

MND, or motor neurone disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms appear gradually and can include muscle weakness, muscle spasms, difficulty speaking, difficulty swallowing and impaired breathing. The earlier a person is diagnosed with MND, the better the chance of successful treatment and slowing the progression of the disease.

It is important to be aware of the early signs of MND so that you can seek medical help as soon as possible. Below are some of the common early signs of MND:

Weakness: Weakness is one of the earliest signs of MND. It may start in one limb or one side of the body. Weakness can also cause difficulty with everyday tasks such as lifting objects or climbing stairs.

Fatigue: Fatigue is another common symptom of MND and may be the first sign noticed by a person. It can be difficult to distinguish between normal tiredness and fatigue caused by MND.

Muscle Twitching: Muscle twitching, or fasciculations, is another early sign of MND. These involuntary contractions of the muscles can be painful and can affect any part of the body, although they tend to be more common in the arms and legs.

Slurred Speech: Slurred speech, also known as dysarthria, is another common symptom of MND. It may be difficult to understand what the person is saying and they may struggle to find the right words.

Difficulty Swallowing: Difficulty swallowing, or dysphagia, is another early sign of MND. This can lead to choking or coughing when eating or drinking. It is important to seek medical help if you are having difficulty swallowing.

If you have any of the above signs or symptoms, it is important to seek medical help as soon as possible. MND can be a difficult disease to diagnose as the symptoms can be similar to those of other conditions. Your doctor may order tests such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or electromyography (EMG) to help diagnose MND.

My first sign of MND was a slight twitching in my right arm. At the time I thought it was just a muscle spasm, but it kept happening and became worse. Eventually I noticed my arm was becoming weaker and I was having trouble with basic tasks like holding a cup or lifting things. I also started to experience muscle cramps and a pins and needles feeling in my feet. I decided to go to the doctor and after further tests, I was diagnosed with MND.

My first signs of MND were a gradual weakening of my legs and arms, as well as some trouble coordinating my movements. I also started having difficulty speaking and swallowing, and eventually started to experience muscle spasms. As the symptoms progressed, I started to notice an increased fatigue and difficulty breathing. These symptoms only got worse as time went on, and eventually led to me being diagnosed with MND.

I'm noticing that I'm having difficulty with my balance and coordination and I'm wondering what other people's first signs were?

My first sign of MND was a gradual weakening of my right forearm and hand. I started dropping things, and noticed my grip was weaker than usual. I also had difficulty writing, and experienced some tingling sensations in my fingers. In addition, I found that my balance and coordination were affected, as I had trouble standing up and walking in a straight line. I saw my doctor, and was eventually diagnosed with MND.
