What were your first signs of MND

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and I'm looking for some help and support. I've recently been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and I'm wondering if anyone else here has experienced it? I'm particularly interested in hearing about what your first signs of MND were, and how you coped with them.

I'm hoping to find some advice and reassurance, so if anyone has any personal experiences they'd like to share, I'd be really grateful.

Symptoms of MND

The most common early signs of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) are:

Weakness – weakness in the hands, feet or ankles is the most common symptom of MND.

Twitching – twitching of the muscles and fasciculations (small muscle spasms) may be experienced.

Tiredness – feeling more tired than usual, especially in the arms and legs.

Difficulty speaking (dysarthria) – slurring of speech and difficulty articulating words can occur.

Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) – difficulty swallowing food and saliva, as well as coughing or choking when eating.

Difficulty writing (dysgraphia) – difficulty writing or drawing, as well as gripping a pen or pencil.

Diagnosing MND

If you experience any of the above symptoms, it is important to speak to your doctor as soon as possible. Your doctor will carry out a physical examination and may refer you for further tests to confirm the diagnosis. These tests may include blood tests, an MRI scan, an electromyogram (EMG) or a nerve conduction study (NCS).

The first signs of MND can vary from person to person, but typically may include muscle weakness, cramps or twitching, difficulty with speech or swallowing, and loss of coordination. In some cases, people may experience unexplained fatigue or weight loss. It is important to get a diagnosis as early as possible to provide the best possible care and support. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to speak to your doctor and seek medical advice.

My first signs of MND were a gradual and progressive loss of strength in my arms and legs. I also noticed increased clumsiness, difficulty with daily tasks such as typing and writing, and increased fatigue. I also experienced muscle twitching and cramping, slurred speech, and difficulty swallowing. These were all the signs that eventually led me to seek medical advice and an MND diagnosis.

My first signs of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) appeared around five months ago. At the time, I noticed a slight weakness in my right arm and leg, as well as some mild cramping. Initially, I thought it was just a sign of fatigue, so I ignored it.

However, over the course of the next few weeks, the cramping and weakness in my limbs began to worsen. I also noticed that I was having difficulty carrying out everyday tasks, such as lifting and carrying things. I started to experience intermittent twitching in my limbs, and my balance was becoming unsteady.

Finally, I decided to visit my doctor to get checked out. After a thorough examination, I was diagnosed with MND. My doctor explained that the signs I had noticed were in fact the first signs of MND, and that it was important to start treatment as soon as possible.

Since then, I have been receiving treatment for MND, and my symptoms have been managed successfully. I am doing my best to stay positive and make the most of each day.

"I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what their first symptoms of MND were."

The first signs of MND can vary from person to person, but some common symptoms include muscle weakness, twitching or cramping, difficulty speaking, swallowing or breathing, and changes in handwriting. Other early signs can include fatigue, difficulty with simple tasks such as buttoning a shirt, and changes in posture or gait. If you think you may be experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical advice as soon as possible.

"I'm noticing some twitching and odd sensations in my hands, could this be a sign of MND?"

Twitching and odd sensations in the hands can be a symptom of MND, however it may also be indicative of other conditions or even nothing at all. It is important to consult your doctor and explain your symptoms in detail in order to determine the cause. Additionally, other signs of MND may include muscle weakness, difficulty chewing and swallowing, slurred speech, and breathing difficulties. If you are concerned about any of these symptoms, it is best to consult your doctor for an evaluation.
