Acromegaly is a rare type of hormonal disorder that results from the overproduction of the growth hormone (GH) by the pituitary gland. It is characterized by an abnormal enlargement of the head, face, hands, and feet. It is a disorder that can affect people of all ages but is most frequently diagnosed in adults, typically between the ages of 30 and 50. Symptoms of acromegaly include an enlarged jaw, facial features, and hands, thickened skin, deepened voice, enlarged organs, enlarged feet and hands, and increased sweating. Other symptoms may include fatigue, headaches, joint pain, vision problems, and sleep apnea. Treatment for acromegaly typically includes medications such as somatostatin analogs, dopamine agonists, and GH receptor antagonists. Surgery to remove the affected pituitary gland may also be necessary.
