Subtitle: Types of Cancer
Cancer is a broad term that covers a variety of diseases caused by abnormal cells growing uncontrollably. There are more than 200 types of cancer, each with its own name and treatment approach. Depending on the type of cancer, it can be treated with surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and/or immunotherapy.
Surgery is a common cancer treatment option. During surgery, a doctor removes the tumor or a portion of the affected organ. Surgery may be used in combination with other treatments, such as chemotherapy, or it may be the only treatment needed.
Radiation therapy uses high-energy beams to destroy cancer cells. Radiation is usually used in combination with surgery, but it may be used as the only treatment in certain cases.
Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells. It is usually given in cycles, with breaks in between each cycle to allow the body to recover. Chemotherapy is often used in combination with other treatments such as surgery or radiation.
Targeted therapy uses drugs to target specific genes or proteins that are involved in cancer cell growth. Targeted therapy can be used in combination with other treatments or as the only treatment.
Immunotherapy uses drugs to boost the immune system and help it fight cancer cells. It is usually used in combination with other treatments.
The type of cancer a person has will determine which treatments are most appropriate. It is important to consult with a doctor to determine the best course of action.
