Immune mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is a type of anemia caused by the body's own immune system attacking and destroying its own red blood cells (RBCs). The body sees the RBCs as foreign invaders and starts to produce antibodies to fight them. The antibodies then bind to the RBCs and cause them to rupture, resulting in anemia. IMHA is a type of anemia that is particularly difficult to treat and can be life-threatening if not treated quickly and effectively.
