Foods to Avoid
Sickle cell patients should avoid foods that are high in saturated and trans fats, as well as processed foods and foods that are high in sodium and sugar. These include:
Saturated fats: Red meat, whole milk, butter, cheese, and other full-fat dairy products.
Trans fats: Fried foods, processed foods, and baked goods.
Sodium: Canned soups, canned vegetables, processed meats, fast food, and snack foods.
Sugar: Soda, candy, and other sweets.
Activities to Avoid
Sickle cell patients should avoid activities that can be physically demanding, such as running, heavy lifting, or vigorous sports. They should also avoid extreme temperatures and activities that can lead to dehydration.
Extreme temperatures: Hot tubs, saunas, and other activities that expose the patient to extreme temperatures.
Dehydration: Excessive exercise, staying in the sun for too long, and other activities that can lead to dehydration.
Medications to Avoid
Sickle cell patients should avoid certain medications, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin. These medications can worsen the symptoms of sickle cell disease.
