Conjunctivitis is a common eye infection that is highly contagious and can be very irritating. It is important to know what to do and what not to do when you have conjunctivitis.

What Not to Do

Do Not Share Towels, Pillows, or Eye Drops – Sharing towels, pillows, or eye drops with someone who has conjunctivitis can spread the infection. If you use eyewear, do not share it with others.

Do Not Touch Your Eyes – If you have conjunctivitis, avoid touching your eyes as much as possible. This can spread the infection and make it worse.

Do Not Wear Contacts – If you wear contact lenses, it is important to stop wearing them until the infection has cleared up. Wearing contact lenses while you have conjunctivitis can worsen the infection and lead to further complications.

Do Not Wear Makeup – Applying makeup can increase your risk of spreading the infection. It is best to avoid wearing makeup until the infection has cleared up.

When to See a Doctor

If your symptoms do not improve after a few days, or if you experience severe pain or vision changes, it is important to see a doctor. Your doctor can diagnose the infection and provide you with treatment.

It is important to avoid any contact with the affected eye. Do not touch or rub the eye, as this can cause further irritation. Additionally, do not share towels, pillows, or eye drops with anyone, as this can spread the infection. Avoid wearing contact lenses, and if you do wear them, ensure that they are properly disinfected. Lastly, make sure to practice good hygiene, including washing your hands regularly and avoiding contact with anyone who may be infected.

Conjunctivitis is an infection of the eye and can be caused by a variety of things. It is important to take the correct steps to avoid making the infection worse. Firstly, do not touch or rub your eyes. This can spread the infection to other parts of the face, and may further irritate the eye. Secondly, use a clean towel and pillowcase when wiping the eyes and avoid sharing these items with others. Lastly, do not wear contact lenses until the infection has cleared. This can cause the infection to spread and can be potentially damaging to the eye.

"I have been diagnosed with conjunctivitis, what should I do?"

The first step is to consult with your doctor and follow their instructions. Depending on the severity of the conjunctivitis, the doctor may suggest medications such as antibiotic eye drops or ointment, with or without oral antibiotics. You should also practice good hygiene to avoid spreading the infection. This includes washing your hands frequently, avoiding touching your face, and not sharing towels, washcloths, or any other personal items. Additionally, it's important to keep the affected eye clean, which can be done by using a warm, damp cloth. It's also helpful to apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and irritation. Finally, be sure to avoid wearing contact lenses until the infection has cleared up.
