I was recently diagnosed with AVM and I'm looking for advice on what not to do while living with it. Does anyone have any experience with this condition or know of any specific things I should avoid? I'm not sure what my limitations are or what I should be mindful of. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

AVM, or arteriovenous malformation, is a tangle of abnormal blood vessels that can occur anywhere in the body. AVMs can be dangerous if left untreated, so it’s important to know what not to do if you are diagnosed with one.

Avoid Self-Diagnosis

It is important to seek medical advice if you suspect you may have an AVM. AVMs can be difficult to diagnose and require specialized testing. Do not try to diagnose yourself or decide on a course of treatment without consulting a doctor.

Avoid Risky Activities

Some activities, such as contact sports or activities that involve rapid movements, can increase the risk of AVM rupture. Talk to your doctor about what activities should be avoided if you have been diagnosed with an AVM.

Avoid Smoking and Alcohol

Smoking and alcohol can increase the risk of complications from AVM. If you have been diagnosed with an AVM, it is important to quit smoking and limit your alcohol intake.

Avoid Exposure to Toxins

Toxins can increase the risk of AVM ruptures, so it is important to avoid exposure to toxins if you have been diagnosed with an AVM. This includes avoiding chemical fumes, pesticides, and other hazardous materials.

Avoid Unnecessary Stress

Stress can be a trigger for AVM ruptures, so it is important to manage stress levels if you have been diagnosed with an AVM. Take time out to relax and practice mindfulness or yoga techniques to help reduce stress levels.

Avoid Over-Exertion

AVMs can be aggravated by over-exertion and straining of the affected area. It is important to take regular breaks and avoid strenuous activities if you have been diagnosed with an AVM.

If you have an AVM, it's important to avoid any activities that could cause a rupture or lead to bleeding in the brain. This includes any contact sports or activities that involve a high risk of head trauma, such as boxing, football, or rock climbing. You should also avoid any recreational drugs or alcohol, as these can increase your risk of stroke. Additionally, it's important to get regular check-ups with your doctor, as they can help identify any changes in your condition that may need to be addressed.

If you have AVM, it's important to take preventative measures to reduce the risk of bleeding. Avoid contact sports and activities that involve a significant risk of head or neck trauma. Additionally, you should avoid smoking, drinking alcohol, and taking medications that can thin the blood, such as aspirin. If you have a headache, use over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen to ease the pain. Lastly, you should see a doctor regularly for check-ups, and if you experience any symptoms, be sure to seek medical attention immediately.

"I recently found out I have an AVM. What should I avoid to ensure the best outcome?"

It is important to avoid activities that put you at risk of injury, as an AVM can be fragile and prone to rupture if disturbed. You should avoid contact sports, activities that involve rapid body movements, or anything that may cause you to fall or be bumped. Additionally, it is important to avoid any activities that increase your blood pressure, as this could increase the risk of a rupture. It is also important to maintain a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and regular exercise. Finally, you should avoid taking any medications or supplements that can thin your blood, as this could increase the risk of bleeding.

"I have an AVM, what are some things I should not do?"

It is important to take extra caution when living with an AVM. Avoid activities that involve heavy lifting, contact sports, or activities that put you at a high risk for head or neck trauma. Avoid straining your neck or head, and also avoid long periods of time in the sun or extreme temperatures. Avoid sudden changes in physical activity, and be sure to discuss any strenuous activity with your doctor prior to engaging in it.
