Antiviral Medications
Antiviral medications are the most commonly prescribed treatment for swine flu. The two main medications used to treat swine flu are oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza). These medications are effective in reducing the severity and duration of the illness, and are recommended for those who are at high risk of serious complications from the flu. Both medications should be taken as soon as possible after symptoms start. Other antiviral medications, such as rimantadine and amantadine, are not recommended for the treatment of swine flu.
Pain Relievers and Fever Reducers
Over-the-counter pain relievers and fever reducers, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and acetaminophen (Tylenol), can be used to reduce fever and relieve body aches. It is important to follow the instructions on the package, and to not give aspirin to children or teenagers who have flu-like symptoms.
Other Treatments
In addition to antiviral medications and over-the-counter pain relievers, other treatments can be used to relieve symptoms of swine flu. These include increasing fluid intake, getting plenty of rest, and using a humidifier or vaporizer to help ease coughing and congestion.
