Symptoms of Rhinitis

Rhinitis is an inflammation of the lining of the nose. Its most common symptoms include sneezing, stuffy nose, runny nose, nasal congestion, and itchy or watery eyes. Other symptoms can include headaches, postnasal drip (mucus dripping down the back of the throat), and fatigue.

Causes of Rhinitis

Rhinitis can be caused by a variety of factors, including allergies, infections, and irritants. Allergies are the most common cause, and can be triggered by pollen, pet dander, mold, and dust mites. Infections, such as colds and the flu, can also cause rhinitis. In some cases, rhinitis can be caused by irritants, such as chemicals, smoke, and strong odors.

Treatments for Rhinitis

The treatment for rhinitis depends on the cause. If it is caused by allergies, an antihistamine or nasal spray may be prescribed. For infections, antibiotics may be prescribed. In addition, there are a number of over-the-counter medications that can be used to treat rhinitis, such as nasal decongestants, nasal sprays, and antihistamines.

Prevention of Rhinitis

The best way to prevent rhinitis is to avoid the triggers that can cause it. If allergies are the cause, avoiding exposure to allergens such as pollen, pet dander, mold, and dust mites can help. Additionally, it is important to practice good hygiene, such as washing your hands frequently, to avoid spreading infections.
