"Hello everyone, I'm looking for help with understanding what lab tests can be used to determine a hemolytic reaction. Can anyone please explain what tests are available and how they work? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Blood Tests For Hemolytic Reaction

The most common lab test for hemolytic reaction is a complete blood count (CBC). This test measures the levels of red and white blood cells, platelets, and hemoglobin. In someone with hemolytic anemia, the CBC will show a low red blood cell count and a low hemoglobin level. Other tests that may be ordered to diagnose hemolytic anemia include:

Direct Coombs Test: This test looks for antibodies on the surface of red blood cells, which can indicate an autoimmune disorder.

Indirect Coombs Test : This test looks for antibodies in the blood that can cause hemolytic anemia.

Haptoglobin Test: This test measures the amount of haptoglobin in the blood. Haptoglobin binds to free hemoglobin, which is released when red blood cells are destroyed.

Reticulocyte Count: This test measures the number of immature red blood cells in the blood. A high reticulocyte count can indicate that the body is trying to make up for the lost red blood cells.

Osmotic Fragility Test: This test measures the fragility of red blood cells when exposed to different concentrations of salt solutions. Red blood cells that are more fragile than normal can indicate hemolytic anemia.

Urine Analysis : A urine sample may be tested for the presence of hemoglobin, which can indicate hemolytic anemia.
