Pancreatitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the pancreas, a large organ located behind the stomach. It can cause severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms.
Symptoms of Pancreatitis
The most common symptom of pancreatitis is abdominal pain. The pain may be severe and can be located in the upper abdomen, the back, or both. It may also be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Other symptoms of pancreatitis can include:
• Loss of appetite
• Fever
• Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
• Abdominal swelling
• Weight loss
• Dark urine
• Light-colored stool
• Itching
Types of Pain Experienced With Pancreatitis
Pancreatitis can cause several different kinds of pain. The type and intensity of pain can vary from person to person. Some people may experience sharp stabbing pain, while others may feel a dull ache or burning sensation. The pain can come and go or may be constant.
Treatment of Pancreatitis Pain
Treatment for pancreatitis pain depends on the severity of the condition. Mild pancreatitis can usually be managed with medications, such as pain relievers, anti-nausea medications, and antibiotics. Severe pancreatitis may require hospitalization and treatment with IV fluids and medications. Surgery may also be necessary to remove damaged portions of the pancreas.
