Traumatic asphyxia is most likely caused by blunt force trauma. This type of trauma occurs when an individual is subjected to a forceful impact, such as a fall, a car accident, or a physical altercation. When the force of the impact is great enough, it can cause the chest cavity to compress, leading to a decrease in the amount of oxygen reaching the lungs. This can cause a person to suffer from a lack of oxygen to the brain, leading to asphyxia. Other causes of traumatic asphyxia may include strangulation or a foreign object lodged in the throat.
