Carcinoid Syndrome:
Carcinoid syndrome is a group of symptoms that occur when functional carcinoid tumors release high amounts of certain chemicals, such as serotonin, into the bloodstream. These chemicals can cause a range of symptoms, including facial flushing, wheezing, diarrhea, and heart problems. The triad of carcinoid syndrome is the combination of three main symptoms, which are facial flushing, diarrhea, and heart problems.
Facial Flushing
Facial flushing is the most common symptom of carcinoid syndrome and is caused by the release of serotonin into the bloodstream. It usually appears as a reddening of the face, neck, and chest. It can last for a few minutes to several hours and can be accompanied by itching, warmth, and/or a burning sensation.
Diarrhea
Diarrhea is another common symptom of carcinoid syndrome, which is caused by the release of serotonin and other chemicals into the bloodstream. It can range from mild to severe and can be accompanied by abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue.
Heart Problems
Carcinoid syndrome can cause heart problems such as heart valve damage, inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis), and abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias). These symptoms can be life-threatening and should be treated immediately.
