The most common test for appendicitis is a physical exam. During the exam, your doctor will look for tenderness in the lower right side of your abdomen. They may also press on your abdomen to see if it causes you pain. Your doctor may also take your temperature, listen to your heartbeat, and check your breathing.
Blood tests, urine tests, and imaging tests may also be used to help diagnose appendicitis. A blood test can help detect signs of infection and inflammation. A urine test can help rule out a urinary tract infection, which can cause similar symptoms. Imaging tests, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, can help your doctor get a better look at your appendix and determine if it is inflamed.
If your doctor suspects appendicitis, they may recommend surgery to remove your appendix. This is the most common treatment for appendicitis and is usually very effective. After your appendix is removed, your symptoms should go away.
