Symptoms of Congenital Heart Disease

Congenital heart disease is a type of heart defect that is present at birth. It is the most common type of birth defect, affecting more than 1% of all newborns. Symptoms of congenital heart disease can vary depending on the type and severity of the defect. Common symptoms may include:

Cyanosis: This is a condition in which the skin has a bluish hue due to a lack of oxygen in the blood.

Tachypnea: This is a condition in which the breathing rate is increased.

Tachycardia: This is a condition in which the heart rate is increased.

Heart Murmurs: These are abnormal heart sounds that can be heard with a stethoscope.

Poor weight gain: Babies with congenital heart disease often have difficulty gaining weight.

Fatigue: Children with congenital heart disease may experience fatigue due to lack of oxygen in the blood.

Shortness of breath: This is a common symptom of congenital heart disease.

Arrhythmias: This is a condition in which the heart beats irregularly.

Swelling: This is a common symptom of congenital heart disease due to fluid buildup in the lungs or other organs.

Congenital heart disease can be diagnosed with a physical exam, x-rays, electrocardiogram (ECG), echocardiogram (echo), and other tests. Treatment for congenital heart disease may include surgery, medications, lifestyle changes, and regular follow-up care.

Congenital heart disease can cause a variety of symptoms, depending on the type and severity of the condition. Some of the most common symptoms include breathlessness, chest pain, fatigue, and a rapid or irregular heartbeat. Other symptoms can include poor blood circulation, dizziness, swollen feet and ankles, and poor appetite. In serious cases, a person may have a bluish tint to the skin (cyanosis), low blood pressure, and difficulty breathing. It's important to seek medical help if you suspect you or your child may have congenital heart disease.

Congenital heart disease is a condition in which the structure of the heart and its blood vessels is abnormal from birth. Symptoms depend on the type of congenital heart disease present, and may include poor growth, breathlessness, fatigue, rapid heartbeat, heart murmur, and abnormal chest X-ray. In some cases, congenital heart disease may cause cyanosis (blue colored skin due to inadequate oxygen levels in the blood) or swelling in the feet, legs, or abdomen. It is important to seek medical advice if you or your child experiences any of these symptoms.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a type of heart defect that is present at birth. Some of the common symptoms of CHD include trouble breathing, rapid breathing, rapid heart rate, poor weight gain, bluish tint to the skin, and fatigue. Other symptoms may include chest pain, frequent infections, fainting, and difficulty exercising. In some cases, the only sign of CHD may be a heart murmur, which is an abnormal sound heard during a heartbeat. If you or your child experience any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention right away.
