The number one cause of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is unknown. It is believed to be caused by a combination of factors including an infant's age, their sleeping position, and the environment they sleep in. Some of the potential factors that may contribute to SIDS include:

Age

Babies younger than 3 months old are at the highest risk for SIDS. As infants reach 4 to 6 months of age, the risk of SIDS begins to decrease.

Sleeping Position

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies sleep on their backs to reduce the risk of SIDS. Sleeping on the stomach or side increases the risk of SIDS.

Environment

Other environmental factors that may increase the risk of SIDS include bed-sharing with an adult, sleeping on soft surfaces, and being exposed to smoke, alcohol, and drugs.

In spite of the unknown cause of SIDS, there are steps that parents and caregivers can take to reduce the risk. These include placing the baby on their back to sleep, avoiding soft bedding, and providing a smoke-free environment.

Unfortunately, the exact cause of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is still unknown. The leading theory is that SIDS occurs when a baby’s environment or physical state makes it difficult for them to arouse from sleep. This can be due to an underlying medical condition, sleeping on the stomach, or exposure to certain pollutants in the environment. Other possible risk factors include being born prematurely, being born to a young mother, or having a family history of SIDS. Experts recommend that parents take steps to reduce the risk of SIDS, such as placing the baby on their back to sleep, avoiding overheating, and not smoking around the baby.

The precise cause of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) remains unknown. However, research suggests that certain factors increase the risk of SIDS. These include having a preterm or low birth weight baby, bed-sharing, and maternal smoking. Other possible contributors to SIDS include an undeveloped brain stem, an inability to regulate breathing and body temperature, and an inability to wake up from sleep. In addition, recent studies have found that abnormalities in the serotonin system may be a factor in some cases of SIDS.

The number 1 cause of SIDS is unknown, but there are a variety of factors that may contribute to an infant’s risk of SIDS. These include an infant’s sleeping environment, such as the use of soft bedding or sleeping in a prone position; prenatal and postnatal risk factors, such as maternal smoking or a baby born prematurely; and medical conditions, such as a heart or breathing disorder. Additionally, research suggests that SIDS may be caused by an underlying brain abnormality, which can lead to an infant not responding to signals of distress or being unable to move out of a dangerous position while sleeping. Therefore, it is important to practice safe sleep habits to reduce the risk of SIDS.

What is the number 1 cause of SIDS?

The leading cause of SIDS is unknown, though it is believed to be linked to certain risk factors such as an infant's sleeping environment and certain health conditions. Additionally, it appears to be more likely in certain populations, such as infants who are born premature or of low birth weight.
