The most prominent symptom of SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) is a unique type of rash called the ‘butterfly rash’ due to its shape resembling a butterfly. This rash is typically found on the face, in the shape of two large red patches that span the cheeks, nose, and forehead. Other symptoms of SLE include joint pain, fatigue, fever, hair loss, and mouth ulcers.

Other common symptoms include headaches, hair loss, sensitivity to sunlight, chest pain, anemia, and confusion. In cases of severe SLE, there may be an increased risk of developing kidney problems, and for this reason regular monitoring of kidney function is important.

SLE is an autoimmune disorder, which means the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells and tissues. It is a chronic condition, and there is no known cure, however many treatments are available to help manage symptoms.
