The most common cause of pancreatitis is gallstones, which can block the pancreatic duct and cause inflammation. This is usually accompanied by abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever. Other causes of pancreatitis include alcohol abuse, certain medications, genetic diseases, certain infections, and trauma. In some cases, the cause of pancreatitis is unknown. Treatment for pancreatitis typically includes pain relief, fluid and electrolyte management, and antibiotics if necessary. In more severe cases, surgery may be required.
