Dysphagia, or difficulty in swallowing, is a fairly common condition that can affect both adults and children. The most common cause of dysphagia is a condition known as esophageal motility disorder, which affects the muscles and nerves of the esophagus. This condition can be caused by a variety of factors, including neurologic disorders such as stroke, Parkinson’s, or multiple sclerosis, as well as diseases of the esophagus such as GERD or eosinophilic esophagitis. Other causes of dysphagia can include an obstruction of the esophagus, an allergic reaction, or a tumor. Treatment for dysphagia will depend on the underlying cause, but may include medications, lifestyle changes, or surgery. If dysphagia is left untreated, it can lead to serious health complications such as malnutrition, dehydration, and aspiration pneumonia.
