Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some help understanding the most common cause of acquired hemolytic anemia. I've read about it online, but I'm still unclear. Can anyone offer some insight or advice on what causes this condition? Can you explain what acquired hemolytic anemia is and what treatments are available? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks.

The most common cause of acquired hemolytic anemia is an autoimmune disorder. Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) occurs when the body's own immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys its own red blood cells. This type of anemia can be caused by a variety of conditions, including infections, certain medications, and underlying diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or HIV. AIHA can also occur as a reaction to a blood transfusion or as a result of certain types of cancer. Treatment of AIHA typically involves the use of corticosteroids, such as prednisone, and other immunosuppressive medications.
