The early phase of allergic rhinitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the nasal passages. Symptoms typically include sneezing, nasal itching, runny nose, and congestion. Allergic rhinitis is often triggered by exposure to allergens such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites, or mold.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of allergic rhinitis include sneezing, nasal itching, runny nose, postnasal drip, and nasal congestion. Other symptoms may include red, itchy, and watery eyes; headaches; dark circles under the eyes; and fatigue. In some cases, symptoms can be severe and can interfere with everyday activities.

Diagnosis

Allergic rhinitis is typically diagnosed based on a person's symptoms and medical history. During a physical exam, a doctor may also look for signs and symptoms of allergic rhinitis, such as swollen nasal passages, nasal discharge, and red, itchy eyes. An allergy skin test can also be used to identify the specific allergens that are causing the symptoms.

Treatment

Treatment for allergic rhinitis typically involves avoiding triggers, such as allergens, and using medications to reduce symptoms. Over-the-counter medications, such as antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal sprays, can be used to reduce congestion and sneezing. Prescription medications, such as corticosteroids and leukotriene modifiers, may be recommended for more severe cases. In some cases, allergy shots may also be recommended.
