Mild pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas that causes abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. It is usually caused by gallstones, alcohol abuse, or medications. Symptoms typically resolve within a few days with rest, pain medication, and a liquid diet. Severe pancreatitis is a serious condition that can cause life-threatening complications and requires intensive medical care. Symptoms of severe pancreatitis can include intense abdominal pain, high fever, rapid heart rate, shock, and organ failure. Treatment usually involves IV fluids, antibiotics, and supportive care. Surgery may be necessary to remove infected or dead tissue.
