Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some help and information about ankylosing spondylitis. I'm trying to understand what one of the earliest signs of this condition might be, and I'm not sure where to start. I've heard that it can be hard to diagnose, and that many people don't realize that they have it until the later stages. Can anyone help me out and tell me what one of the earliest signs of ankylosing spondylitis might be? Any advice or experiences you can share would be greatly appreciated.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the spine and other joints, such as the hips and shoulders. One of the earliest signs of ankylosing spondylitis is lower back pain and stiffness. The back pain may start gradually and worsen over time. It’s often worse in the morning and after periods of inactivity. Other signs and symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis include:

Fatigue

People with AS may experience fatigue due to the inflammation in the joints and other parts of the body.

Pain and stiffness in other joints

The pain and stiffness associated with AS can move to other joints, such as the hips, knees, and shoulders.

Restricted spinal movement

AS can cause the spinal joints to fuse together, which limits spinal movement.

Uveitis

Uveitis is an inflammation of the uvea, which is the middle layer of the eye. It can cause eye pain, redness, and blurred vision.

Swelling of the feet and ankles

AS can cause swelling in the feet and ankles due to the accumulation of fluid.

Reduced lung capacity

AS can cause inflammation of the lung tissue, which can lead to a reduced lung capacity.

One of the earliest signs of ankylosing spondylitis is lower back pain and stiffness. This pain usually begins gradually and tends to worsen over time. Other early signs can include fatigue, weight loss, fever, and loss of appetite. Additionally, there may be a tenderness in the lower back and hips, accompanied by a limited range of motion. Furthermore, some people with ankylosing spondylitis experience a feeling of tightness in the chest and difficulty breathing. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to consult your doctor.

One of the earliest signs of ankylosing spondylitis is persistent lower back pain that is worse in the morning and at night. The pain is usually worse after periods of inactivity, and can even be accompanied by stiffness and tenderness in the lower back and buttocks. Other early signs of ankylosing spondylitis can include fatigue, loss of appetite, and inflammation of the eyes. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to consult a doctor for a proper diagnosis.

One of the earliest signs of ankylosing spondylitis is lower back pain. The pain may be worse in the morning and improve throughout the day. It may also be associated with stiffness, difficulty bending, or a feeling of tightness in the lower back. Other early signs include fatigue, weight loss, and anemia. In some cases, inflammation of the eyes, known as uveitis, may also be present.

It is important to note that these signs are often subtle and may not be recognized until the disease has progressed significantly. This is why it is important to talk to a doctor if you are experiencing any of these symptoms. Ankylosing spondylitis can often be treated and managed if caught early, so seeking medical advice is key.

Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic, progressive form of arthritis that primarily affects the spine, although other joints may also be involved. One of the earliest signs of ankylosing spondylitis is persistent lower back pain, especially stiffness in the morning or after inactivity. Other common signs and symptoms may include fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, and stiffness in the hips or shoulders. In some cases, pain and stiffness may also occur in the ribs, heels, and other joints. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention as early diagnosis and treatment can help slow the progression of the disease.
