Normal blood pressure varies by age. Generally speaking, a person’s blood pressure should remain within the healthy range of less than 120/80 mmHg. The top number, known as the systolic pressure, is the pressure in the blood vessels when the heart contracts. The bottom number, known as the diastolic pressure, is the pressure in the blood vessels when the heart relaxes.
For adults aged 18 and older, a normal blood pressure range is less than 120/80 mmHg. A blood pressure reading of less than 120/80 mmHg is considered optimal. A blood pressure reading of 120-129/80 mmHg is considered normal. A reading of 130-139/80-89 mmHg is considered high-normal. A reading of 140/90 mmHg or higher is considered high.
For children and adolescents, the normal range of blood pressure is lower than for adults. For children aged 1-10 years old, a normal blood pressure is lower than the 90th percentile for their age, gender, and height. For adolescents aged 11-17, a normal blood pressure is lower than the 95th percentile for their age, gender, and height.
It’s important to note that blood pressure should be taken regularly to ensure that it remains within the healthy range. In some cases, lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise can help to lower a person’s blood pressure. If lifestyle changes do not help, medications may be prescribed to help control blood pressure.
