Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a form of hearing loss caused by exposure to loud noise. It is a permanent damage to the inner ear, and can affect anyone, regardless of age or gender. NIHL can be caused by a single loud sound, such as a gunshot or a loud concert, or by exposure to loud noise over an extended period of time, such as working in a factory or listening to loud music. NIHL can lead to difficulties in hearing and understanding conversations, and can even cause complete hearing loss in some cases.
Causes of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss
The most common cause of NIHL is the prolonged exposure to loud noise. This can occur in the workplace, at home, or in recreational activities. Prolonged exposure to noise levels over 85 decibels (dB) can cause permanent damage to the inner ear. Common sources of loud noise include loud music, factory machinery, and sporting events.
Symptoms of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss
The first symptom of NIHL is a gradual decrease in hearing ability. Other signs include ringing in the ears (tinnitus), difficulty understanding speech, and a feeling of fullness in the ears.
Preventing Noise-Induced Hearing Loss
The best way to protect against NIHL is to avoid exposure to loud noises. If you must be exposed to loud noises, use ear protection, such as earplugs or earmuffs. If you are already experiencing symptoms of NIHL, you should see an audiologist or otolaryngologist for a hearing test.
Treatment for Noise-Induced Hearing Loss
Currently, there is no cure for NIHL. However, there are treatments available to help manage the symptoms of NIHL. These include hearing aids, assistive listening devices, and cochlear implants. In some cases, a surgical procedure may be recommended.
