Mild pancreatitis is a form of pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas is a small organ located behind the stomach that helps with digestion and produces hormones. Mild pancreatitis typically causes abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Other symptoms may include fever, jaundice, and weight loss. Treatment for mild pancreatitis usually involves pain relief, fluids, and a low-fat diet.

Symptoms of Mild Pancreatitis

The main symptom of mild pancreatitis is abdominal pain. It usually begins in the upper abdomen and may radiate to the back or chest. Other symptoms of mild pancreatitis may include nausea and vomiting, fever, jaundice, and weight loss.

Causes of Mild Pancreatitis

The cause of mild pancreatitis is usually unknown, but it can be caused by certain medications or medical conditions. These include gallstones, alcohol abuse, certain infections, and certain medications, such as steroids or diuretics.

Diagnosis of Mild Pancreatitis

If your doctor suspects that you have mild pancreatitis, they will likely order blood tests, an imaging test, and possibly a biopsy. The imaging test will likely include an ultrasound, a CT scan, or an MRI.

Treatment of Mild Pancreatitis

Treatment of mild pancreatitis usually involves pain relief, fluids, and a low-fat diet. Your doctor may also prescribe medications to reduce inflammation, such as corticosteroids. In some cases, surgery may be needed to remove an obstruction or to repair damaged tissue.
