LDH stands for Lactate Dehydrogenase. It is an enzyme produced by the cells in the body that helps break down carbohydrates into energy. In an anemia workup, LDH is measured to determine the amount of red blood cells that are being destroyed. A higher than normal LDH level indicates that red blood cells are being destroyed faster than they are being created, which can be an indication of anemia.
