I'm hoping to get some help understanding what a Coombs test positive result means. Can anyone explain what this test is and what it could indicate if it comes back positive? I'm looking to learn more about the connection between a positive test result and the conditions it can indicate.

Coombs test is a blood test that detects antibodies in the blood that attack red blood cells. It is also known as the direct antiglobulin test or DAT. It is used to diagnose anemia, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, and to detect antibodies that may be causing a blood transfusion reaction. It is also used to detect Rh incompatibility in a newborn infant, which can cause hemolytic disease of the newborn. The test is considered positive if antibodies are present in the patient's blood sample.
