Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid, meaning it is necessary for the human body to function properly. It is also known by its chemical name, L-alpha-aminophenylalanine, or simply L-phenylalanine. Phenylalanine plays a vital role in the body's production of serotonin, dopamine, and other neurotransmitters that help regulate mood and behavior. It is also important for the production of melanin, which is responsible for the color of skin, hair, and eyes. For these reasons, phenylalanine is sometimes referred to as an "essential neurotransmitter."

Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that plays an important role in the synthesis of proteins. Its other name is L-alpha-amino-beta-phenylpropionic acid. It is a precursor of the neurotransmitters dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. The body can synthesize phenylalanine from other amino acids, but it must be obtained from the diet in order to maintain optimal health. It is found in many foods, including meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, nuts, legumes, and some fruits and vegetables. Phenylalanine can also be found in many dietary supplements, such as protein powders and weight loss products.
