Mechanical asphyxia is a form of asphyxiation that occurs when a person’s airway is blocked or constricted, preventing them from breathing properly. It can be caused by a variety of objects or methods, including strangulation, hanging, chest compression, and the covering of the mouth or nose. The most common example of mechanical asphyxia is strangulation, which is when an object such as a rope, scarf, or wire is used to wrap around a person’s neck and restricts their airway. Hanging is another form of mechanical asphyxia that occurs when a person is hanged by a rope, belt, or other object, blocking their airway. Chest compression, which can be caused by a heavy object placed on the chest or the use of a device such as a tourniquet, is another example of mechanical asphyxia. Lastly, the covering of the mouth or nose, such as with a bag or cloth, can also cause mechanical asphyxia.
