An allergic reaction that will not go away is a condition called allergic persistence, where a person is exposed to an allergen and experiences symptoms that do not resolve over time. Allergic persistence can occur with any type of allergen, including foods, environmental allergens, and medications. Symptoms of allergic persistence may include hives, itching, sneezing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. Allergic persistence can be particularly dangerous for those with severe allergies, as it can lead to anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction that requires immediate medical attention.

Causes of Allergic Persistence

Allergic persistence can be caused by several different factors. One of the most common causes is repeated exposure to the same allergen, resulting in a heightened sensitivity. Another common cause is the development of cross-reactivity, where the body mistakenly identifies an unrelated allergen as the same one triggering the allergic reaction. In some cases, an individual may develop a new allergic reaction due to changes in the body’s immune system.

Treatment for Allergic Persistence

The best way to treat an allergic reaction that will not go away is to identify and avoid the allergen or allergens triggering the reaction. For those with severe allergies, it is important to carry an EpiPen or other auto-injector medication to treat anaphylaxis if it occurs. Other treatments may include antihistamines, corticosteroids, decongestants, and other medications prescribed by a doctor. In some cases, immunotherapy may be recommended to reduce symptoms from exposure to the allergen.
