AST stands for aspartate aminotransferase, an enzyme found in the liver, heart, and other organs. It is normally present in the blood at low levels. An AST level that is higher than normal can indicate liver damage or disease. An AST level that is significantly higher than normal is considered to be an alarmingly high level and could be a sign of a serious underlying medical condition.

What Causes an Elevated AST Level?

An elevated AST level can be caused by many factors, including alcohol abuse, viral hepatitis, certain medications, and the use of illegal drugs. In some cases, an elevated AST level can be a sign of a more serious underlying medical condition, such as cirrhosis or cancer.

Treatment for an Alarmingly High AST Level

The treatment for an alarmingly high AST level depends on the cause. In some cases, lifestyle changes such as reducing alcohol intake or quitting smoking may be enough to reduce the AST level. In other cases, medications may be necessary to treat the underlying condition. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged part of the liver.

Monitoring AST Levels

Since an alarmingly high AST level can be a sign of a serious underlying condition, it is important to monitor AST levels regularly. A doctor can order blood tests to measure AST levels and determine if there are any underlying medical conditions that need to be treated.
