Acromegaly is a condition characterized by overproduction of growth hormone from the pituitary gland, which causes excessive growth of the face, hands, feet, and other body parts. This condition is usually caused by a benign tumor of the pituitary gland. Symptoms of acromegaly include enlarged hands and feet, thickening of the skin, coarse facial features, and protruding jaw.

Facial Appearance

Acromegaly facial appearance is characterized by an enlarged jaw, thickened lips, oversized nose, and enlarged facial features. The forehead is often enlarged, and the eyes may appear deep-set and lack brow prominence. The face may appear rounded or square shaped, and the chin may be prominent. The skin may become thicker and more oily in texture, and wrinkles may be more pronounced.

Other Symptoms

In addition to facial changes, other symptoms of acromegaly may include joint pain, headaches, fatigue, excessive sweating, and irregular menstrual cycles. People with acromegaly may also experience vision changes, increased risk of diabetes, and increased risk of certain cancers.

Treatment

Treatment of acromegaly often involves medication to control the excess production of growth hormone. Surgery may also be used to remove the tumor that is causing the overproduction of growth hormone. Other treatments may include radiation therapy and lifestyle changes.

Acromegaly can have a significant impact on a person's quality of life. It is important for people who are experiencing symptoms of this condition to seek prompt medical attention. With proper diagnosis and treatment, many people with acromegaly are able to manage their condition and improve their overall well-being.

Acromegaly is a disorder of the endocrine system caused by a noncancerous tumor of the pituitary gland that produces excessive amounts of the growth hormone. It can occur at any age, but most commonly affects adults. The most obvious symptom of acromegaly is an altered facial appearance.

A person with acromegaly typically has an enlarged forehead, thickened facial features, and larger hands and feet. The nose and ears may grow larger than normal and the lips may become thicker. The jawbone may also be enlarged, causing the teeth to become misaligned and the face to appear wider. The eyes may also become sunken, giving the face an aged appearance.

The excess growth hormone can also lead to excessive sweating, oily skin, and acne. Acromegaly can also cause changes in the voice, such as deepening or hoarseness. Other symptoms of acromegaly include fatigue, joint pain, headaches, and excessive hair growth on the face, chest, and back.

If untreated, acromegaly can lead to serious health complications, such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and sleep apnea. Treatment typically includes medications and surgery to remove the tumor. In some cases, radiation therapy may be used. With proper treatment, the symptoms of acromegaly can be managed and the outlook is generally good.
