Introduction to Rhinitis

Rhinitis is a common condition that affects the nose, causing inflammation and irritation of the lining of the nose. Symptoms of rhinitis can include sneezing, runny nose, and congestion. Some people may also experience an itchy nose and throat. Rhinitis can be caused by allergies, colds, or infections.

Foods that May Make Rhinitis Worse

Certain foods can trigger or worsen the symptoms of rhinitis. Dairy products, such as milk, cheese, and ice cream, can irritate the mucous membranes in the nose and cause inflammation. Processed meats such as bacon, hot dogs, and deli meats can also cause inflammation. Other foods that may trigger or worsen rhinitis symptoms include peanuts, soy, wheat, shellfish, and eggs.

Foods to Avoid

People with rhinitis should avoid foods that are known to cause inflammation or trigger symptoms. These include dairy products, processed meats, peanuts, soy, wheat, shellfish, and eggs. It is also important to avoid foods that are high in sugar, processed carbohydrates, and fat, as these can also cause inflammation.

Foods that Help with Rhinitis

In addition to avoiding the foods that can trigger or worsen rhinitis, it is important to include foods in the diet that can help reduce inflammation. Foods that are rich in anti-inflammatory compounds, such as omega-3 fatty acids, can help reduce inflammation and improve symptoms. Examples of these foods include fatty fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel, and sardines, as well as walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds. Other foods that can help reduce inflammation include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and garlic.
