Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects communication, behavior, and social interaction. It is characterized by difficulties in social interaction, communication, and restricted and repetitive behavior. People with ASD may struggle with controlling emotions, making friends, and understanding social cues. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and vary from person to person.
Symptoms of ASD
People with ASD may experience difficulty in social interaction, communication, and behavior. Some common symptoms of ASD include:
• Difficulty understanding social cues and nonverbal communication
• Repetitive behaviors such as hand flapping, rocking, or spinning
• Problems with verbal and nonverbal communication
• Difficulty making and maintaining relationships
• Unusual interests or fixations
• Sensory sensitivities
Diagnosis of ASD
ASD is usually diagnosed by a team of specialists that include psychologists, psychiatrists, and other medical professionals. To make a diagnosis, the team will assess the individual’s development, behavior, and medical history. They may also use screening tools, such as the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R).
Treatment of ASD
There is no cure for ASD, but early intervention and ongoing treatment can help individuals learn to cope and manage their symptoms.
