Subtitle: Enzyme Indicators of Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas, an organ located behind the stomach, which is responsible for producing digestive enzymes and hormones. The most common cause of pancreatitis is the buildup of digestive enzymes in the pancreas that leads to its inflammation. The enzymes involved in pancreatitis are amylase and lipase.

Amylase: Amylase is an enzyme secreted in the pancreas and salivary glands that helps to break down carbohydrates. Elevated levels of amylase in the blood are a marker of pancreatitis.

Lipase: Lipase is an enzyme produced by the pancreas that helps to break down fats. Elevated levels of lipase in the blood are a marker of pancreatitis.

The diagnosis of pancreatitis is usually made based on the presence of two or more of the following: abdominal pain, elevated levels of amylase or lipase, and imaging tests (CT scan or MRI) showing inflammation of the pancreas. Treatment of pancreatitis is usually supportive, and may include pain medication, antibiotics, and dietary changes.
