Hey everyone,

I'm hoping someone can help me out with this question. What does the root word asphyxia mean? I'm doing some research on the medical field and came across this word, but I'm not sure what it means exactly. I'd really appreciate any help or guidance anyone can provide on this.

Asphyxia is derived from the Greek word asphyxía which means "without pulse" and refers to a condition in which the body is unable to get enough oxygen to function properly. It can be caused by a variety of factors including obstruction of the airways, lack of ventilation, and chemical exposure. Symptoms of asphyxia can include difficulty breathing, confusion, lightheadedness, and coma. In extreme cases, it can lead to death.
