MS stands for Multiple Sclerosis, a chronic, disabling disease of the central nervous system. It is an autoimmune disorder, meaning that the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. The damage affects the myelin, the protective sheath that covers nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. This damage disrupts the communication between the brain and the rest of the body, leading to a variety of symptoms, including fatigue, impaired coordination and balance, numbness, vision problems, and difficulty with thinking and memory. There is no cure for MS, but treatments are available that can help manage the symptoms and slow the progression of the disease.
