Marsupialization is a surgical technique used to treat certain medical conditions. It is most commonly used to treat a condition called umbilical hernia, in which the abdominal wall is weakened or torn, allowing part of the abdominal contents, such as the intestines, to protrude through the opening. During the procedure, the surgeon forms a pouch or “marsupium” over the hernia, by suturing the surrounding tissues. This pouch is then filled with a material, such as gauze, to provide support and to prevent the hernia from recurring. The procedure is minimally invasive and can usually be done under local anesthesia.
