What does asphyxiated mean in skin

Does anyone know what asphyxiated means when related to skin? I've heard it mentioned before but I'm not sure what it actually means. I'm hoping someone can help me understand what it means, and how it relates to skin. Is it an issue I should be concerned about or is it something that can be addressed easily?
