Intersex people can look like anyone else; they can have any combination of physical sex characteristics. Intersex people can be male, female, or somewhere in between. Some intersex people have genitals, reproductive organs, and other physical sex characteristics that are on the boundary between typical male and female characteristics, while others have physical characteristics that are not traditionally associated with either male or female bodies.
What Is Intersex?
Intersex is an umbrella term used to describe a broad range of physical sex characteristics that do not fit typical binary notions of male and female bodies. Intersex people can possess a combination of male and female physical characteristics or have physical characteristics that are unusual for either gender.
How Common Is Intersex?
Intersex conditions are believed to be relatively common, occurring in as many as 1 in 2000 births. However, many intersex conditions are not visible at birth and can go unnoticed until puberty or later.
What Are Some Examples of Intersex Conditions?
There are several different intersex conditions that can affect a person’s physical characteristics. Some of the more common intersex conditions include:
• Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH): CAH is a condition in which the adrenal glands produce an excess of male hormones, resulting in a variety of physical characteristics including ambiguous genitalia, a large clitoris, or fused labia.
• Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (AIS): AIS is a condition in which the body does not respond to male hormones, resulting in a variety of physical characteristics including a female-appearing body but with male chromosomes and internal reproductive organs.
• Klinefelter Syndrome: Klinefelter Syndrome is a condition in which a person has an extra X chromosome, resulting in a variety of physical characteristics including a tall stature, enlarged breasts, and an inability to produce sperm.
What Are the Ways Intersex People Can Identify?
Intersex people can identify as male, female, neither, both, or somewhere in between. It is also important to recognize that intersex people may have a different gender identity than their physical sex characteristics. Intersex people can have any gender identity, including non-binary, transgender, or gender non-conforming identities.
