Strangulation occurs when a person’s breathing is blocked off by external pressure on the neck, often caused by someone’s hands, arms, or a ligature. When a person is strangled, the lack of oxygen can cause serious physical and psychological damage, and can even lead to death.

Physical Damage

Strangulation can cause several physical injuries, including:

• Damage to the larynx, windpipe, and vocal cords
• Abrasions to the neck
• Damaged nerves and arteries
• Brain damage due to lack of oxygen
• Internal bleeding
• Damage to the thyroid, esophagus, and other muscles in the neck
• Fractured hyoid bone in the neck

Psychological Damage

Victims of strangulation can also experience psychological symptoms and trauma, such as:

• Anxiety and depression
• Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
• Nightmares and flashbacks
• Difficulty sleeping
• Intense fear
• Panic attacks

Risk of Death

Strangulation is an incredibly dangerous act that can be fatal. It can cause death in several ways, including:

• Brain damage due to lack of oxygen
• Damage to the airway, throat, and neck muscles
• Damage to the heart and lungs
• Internal bleeding
• Asphyxiation

Strangulation is a serious crime and can have long-lasting effects. If you or someone you know has been a victim of strangulation, it is important to seek medical help and support as soon as possible.
