What is Sudden Death?
Sudden death, also known as sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), is a condition in which the heart suddenly stops beating due to an electrical malfunction in the heart. It is a medical emergency that can cause death if not treated immediately.
Signs and Symptoms of Sudden Death
The most common symptoms of sudden death include loss of consciousness, lack of pulse, and difficulty breathing. Other symptoms may include chest pain, dizziness, lightheadedness, and palpitations.
What Comes After Sudden Death?
When a person experiences sudden death, the first thing that must be done is to call 911 and begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). CPR is a procedure that involves chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth rescue breaths to help restore circulation and breathing. If a defibrillator is available, it can be used to shock the heart to restore its normal rhythm.
If CPR is successful in restoring circulation and breathing, the victim will need to be taken to the hospital for further treatment. This may include medications to stabilize the heart rhythm and surgery to correct any underlying heart problems.
If the person does not survive the sudden death, their family must make arrangements for the body to be taken to a funeral home for preparation and burial. The family may also wish to arrange a memorial service or other type of gathering to remember the person who has passed away.
