Famed physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in 1963. The disease is a progressive motor neuron disorder that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord responsible for muscle movement. As ALS progresses, it weakens muscles and impacts physical function, eventually leading to total paralysis. Despite his diagnosis, Hawking was able to live an incredibly fulfilling life, becoming an international celebrity and academic, authoring best-selling books, and inspiring people with his brilliance and courage.

Hawking was an active advocate for ALS awareness and research, using his fame to raise money for research and help other people with the disease. He was a vocal supporter of the Ice Bucket Challenge, which raised millions of dollars for ALS research, and the Stephen Hawking Foundation, which works to support those living with ALS and further research into the disease.

Hawking passed away in 2018, but his legacy lives on. He has been an inspiration to many and is remembered as a great example of someone living with ALS and making a positive impact on the world.
