Arterial Fibrillation
Arterial fibrillation, also known as AFib or AF, is one of the most common causes of an irregular heartbeat. It is a condition in which the heart beats irregularly, often too quickly or too slowly, and can cause lightheadedness, fainting, chest pain, and even stroke. It is caused by misfiring electrical signals in the heart, disrupting the normal rhythm.
Electrical Problems in the Heart
Another common cause of an irregular heartbeat is an electrical problem in the heart. This can occur when the electrical impulses that control the heart’s rhythm become disrupted. This can be due to a variety of causes, including scarring or damage to the heart muscle, a congenital heart defect, or certain medications.
Heart Disease
Heart disease can also cause an irregular heartbeat. Coronary artery disease (CAD) and other heart diseases can lead to an abnormal heart rhythm. CAD is a condition in which the arteries that supply blood to the heart become narrowed or blocked, and can cause the heart to beat too quickly or too slowly.
Other Causes
Other causes of an irregular heartbeat include thyroid problems, excessive alcohol use, stress, and certain medications. In some cases, the cause is unknown and is referred to as idiopathic arrhythmia. It is important to talk to your doctor if you experience any symptoms of an irregular heartbeat so that they can investigate the cause.
