Stage 4 pancreatic cancer is the most advanced stage of the disease, with cancer having spread to other parts of the body. It is also known as metastatic pancreatic cancer. Death from pancreatic cancer is usually caused by the spread of the cancer to other organs in the body, resulting in organ failure. Other factors that can contribute to death in stage 4 pancreatic cancer include the following:

Spread of Cancer

The spread of pancreatic cancer to other parts of the body is the most common cause of death in stage 4 pancreatic cancer patients. As the cancer grows and spreads, it can affect other organs and systems, causing them to fail. This can cause symptoms such as pain, fatigue, weakness, and difficulty breathing. As the cancer spreads, it can cause tumors to form in other areas of the body, which can impede the functioning of vital organs.

Organ Failure

When the cancer has spread to other organs, it can cause them to fail. This can result in organ failure, which can be fatal. The most common organs affected by pancreatic cancer metastasis are the liver, lungs, and brain. In some cases, the cancer can spread to the bones, causing them to weaken and fracture.

Tumor Blockage

As the cancer grows and spreads, it can form tumors, which can block the normal functioning of organs. This can cause organ failure, as the organ cannot get enough oxygen or nutrients. Tumor blockage can also cause fluid to build up in the lungs, leading to a condition called pleural effusion.

Complications From Treatment

Treatment for pancreatic cancer, such as chemotherapy and radiation, can also cause complications. These can include anemia, infection, fatigue, and nausea. In some cases, these complications can lead to organ failure or death.

Overall Health

Overall health can also play a role in death from stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Patients with weaker immune systems or other underlying health conditions are at a higher risk of death from pancreatic cancer.
